Pro Tips For Designing An Aesthetic Pool Area

Pro Tips For Designing An Aesthetic Pool Area

A swimming pool makes a great focal point in your backyard, but the landscaping is just as important as the design of your pool. You can make it look more attractive and inviting by adding a raised deck, beautiful trees and plants, or a stylish entertainment area around the pool.

Here are more tips for designing an aesthetic pool area.

Get the pool decking right

Consider capped composite timber decking as it looks timeless and natural, and it’s more affordable and easier to maintain than other types of decking. It also offers the following benefits:

  • Resistant to sun, water, and fire
  • Not affected by pool salts and chemicals
  • It’s colourfast and eco-friendly
  • Smooth, clean, and cool surface
  • Excellent traction
  • No additional framing required
  • No visible screws or nails.

Apart from the decking boards, the things you need to build your pool deck include a screwdriver (electric or otherwise), clips & screws, box level, and measuring tape. The amount of composite decking required depends on the size of your deck.

You should build the pool deck within two inches from the bottom of the access door. For example, a home built at ground level needs a low-elevation deck, and a raised home needs a mid-elevation deck. In both cases, adjustable pedestal flooring is an excellent solution. It’s a raised floor system that sits on pedestals above the substrate, creating space below for cables, pipes, and electrics. In turn, this keeps the surface free of clutter and aesthetically pleasing.

There are three types of adjustable pedestal pavers for decks: the SE, NM, and Star T Series Pedestals. These can be installed on sloping or uneven surfaces. At KEKSIÄ, we have an adaptive decking system called the Wood Deck System and it can be used with these pedestal bases.

Drainage is also important for timber decks, as any water trapped underneath can reduce the lifespan of the decking and substrate. For excellent drainage, prepare the ground with drainage materials like gravel and agi pipe, and install the Wood Deck System along with your choice of pedestal.

So, if you’re building a timber deck, these pedestal flooring solutions will allow you to quickly and easily create an elegant, stable and level pool deck, with a self-draining floor.

Create a luxury aesthetic

When designing the area around your pool, you’ll want to make it beautiful to look at both during the day and at night, and from inside and outside of the pool. You also have to make sure it compliments both the pool and your home, for instance you can take inspiration from the architectural style and colours of your home.

Here are some ways you can add beauty, value, and luxury to your pool area:

  • Adventure – Install slides, splash zones, spas, bridges, fountains, lazy rivers, colourful lighting, or a luxurious cabana. You can also install playful paths leading up to the pool. Mosaic tiles can add character and pops of colour to your pool area.
  • Entertainment – Build a paved area with comfy lounges and pillows, outdoor umbrellas and rugs, chairs and tables, an outdoor barbeque or kitchen, or a swim-up bar.
  • Nature – Create a forest-like effect with rockeries, ferneries, grottos, and water features so it feels like you’re swimming in a secluded lake. For a modern look, place potted plants or succulents (ie cotyledons, senecios, dudleyas) around the pool. Fragrant plants like jasmine, gardenia, or lemongrass can make your pool area feel like a spa.
  • Privacy – Provide some seclusion with shrubs, tropical plants, screens, or fencing. Ornamental grasses like zebra grass or feather grass will stand out against your pool and create a sense of privacy. You can also plant trees around the pool, such as palm trees, citrus trees or juniper trees, for shading and privacy.
